Specialised Services

At Makerfield Eye Centre, we are proud to offer a range of specialised services designed to support patients with unique visual needs.

Visual Stress

Visual stress refers to a range of symptoms that can occur when the brain has difficulty processing visual information. Common signs include headaches, eye strain, fatigue while reading, or words appearing to move or blur on the page. It is often associated with reading difficulties, including dyslexia, and can significantly impact daily life if left unaddressed.

Overlay Assessment

An overlay assessment involves testing coloured overlays – transparent sheets placed over text – to determine whether they help reduce symptoms of visual stress. Many individuals experience immediate relief and improved reading fluency when using the correct colour overlay. At Makerfield Eye Centre, we provide comprehensive overlay assessments to identify the most effective solution for you or your child.

Colorimetry

For patients who find sustained relief from coloured overlays, we offer precision colour testing using the Intuitive Colorimeter™ system. Colorimetry is a more advanced, scientific approach that identifies a precise tint, tailored specifically to the individual's needs, which can then be incorporated into custom-made tinted lenses. These lenses can be worn in spectacles and provide long-term relief from visual stress symptoms, both in reading and in everyday life. Our colour assessments are particularly beneficial for children and adults with dyslexia, migraines, or light sensitivity, and are carried out in a calm, patient-focused environment by our specially trained optometrists.
